National Strategy and Plan of Action for Female Participation in Education

Executive Summary

Education plays a key role in advancing social and economic development in all societies. Somaliland is emerging from a prolonged civil war that has disrupted the social fabric of society and has also had a devastating impact on the education sector. Despite positive progress, the enrollment and completion rate to basic education remains low and girls are particularly underrepresented in schools.

Throughout the reconstruction of Somaliland, efforts have been made to strengthen the capacity of the education system in order to provide equal access to anyone who wishes to learn. This progress has been possible because of the generous financial contribution from local and international development partners. Through targeted efforts, there is an increase in the number of girls that have joined schools or enrolled in various skills training.
