Commemoration of International Literacy Day

The Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Somaliland held a commemoration of International Literacy Day today in Hargeisa, an event observed worldwide each year on September 8th.

The well-attended ceremony brought together the State Minister of Education, Hon. Maxamed Faacuul; directors from various departments of the Ministry; students from primary and non-formal education schools; representatives from partner organisations; and many distinguished guests.

The event was opened by the Director of the Department of Non-Formal Education, Ms Umalkhayr, who delivered a speech highlighting the importance of literacy. She emphasised that literacy is the foundation of both individual and societal development, playing a vital role in enhancing knowledge, intellectual growth, and social progress.

Other officials who spoke at the gathering also underlined the transformative role of reading and writing in advancing communities.

Finally, the State Minister of Education, Hon. Maxamed Faacuul, who officially closed the ceremony, spoke about the Ministry’s plans to promote literacy and writing skills. He stressed the government’s firm commitment to eradicating illiteracy and combating the challenges of a limited reading and writing culture.
